Noooooooooooo!

Our desktop PC seems to be in self-destruct mode. I went into the office just now to dump my camera, and when I turned it on it scared the shit out of me. The monitor wouldn't go on (we leave the main power on all the time and allow the computer to power it up or down upon start or shutdown), the computer started beeping and the fan began whirring insanely. The beeping was coming from the computer itself, and it was more like an alarm, get out now and run for your life sort of thing. If you've ever played Goldeneye and were caught by the security cameras, you know what I am talking about. I turned it off. I turned it back on. Same shit. I turned it off. I don't want to die! What the hell is it doing? It was fine on the weekend, and now it wants to explode.

Perhaps it's jealous. Since we got the wireless router and l got my iBook, it's been neglected. It's main purpose is now games, bittorrent and mass storage. It must be lonely and now it's not going out alone, but taking us all with it.

I have a lot of stuff on that machine I can't bear to lose...mostly photos. We bought blank dvds on which to organize and back up the photos, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I don't even want to think about it. Also, the computer is 3 years old now, but it's still an awesome computer: 3.4 ghz, 1gb ram and a fantastic video card. I don't want to lose it!

Jeremy's got a friend at work who might be able to help, some sort of PC guru. Hopefully they can work the problem over the phone sometime tomorrow. I'm so stressed out. Pictures of my grandma's last Christmas with us are on there. Oh god. I can't lose those. If worse comes to worst, hopefully we'll be able to hook the hard drive up to a friend's machine as a slave and get the data.

Haven't been by in a little bit...this was my introduction to the kitties!

Welcome kitties! They are seriously too cute. I'd bet they'd whip my kids' asses at Cute Overload!

you needed the Darth sound bite from StarWars III to really make an impact.

Big relief...we just found out from Dell that we're still covered under next-day on-site service warranty, and will be until Sept. 2007. So tonight when he gets home from work, Jeremy will try to troubleshoot on the phone but if we can't work it out, someone will come to our home at our convenience to fix it. Whew. I thought we bought the computer 3 years ago, but it was actually 2 years ago.

at your convenience? seriously? That's great.... I would have thought you'd get "we'll be there sometime between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm, will someone be home?". Good luck to ya. Now please, release the death grip...

Soosan · Feb 20 · 7:09 PM

The dealio is that they should come by 9am next day, but since I'm a stay-at-home person, anytime between 8 and 5 is convenient for me. But we'll want them to come on Wednesday because we're busy tomorrow.

The last time we had to call in a Dell warranty was many years ago. Jeremy and I had just started dating, and the 4gb hard drive in his PII just died. He called, and they asked if he just wanted the new drive or did he need a technician as well. Jeremy knew how to install a hard drive, and a courier brought one at 9 the next morning as promised. A 6gb drive...because they no longer made 4gb. Ha ha ha!

I've heard lots of Dell horror stories, but we've never experienced anything bad. The only thing I was disappointed in is that if you call tech support nowadays, you'll get a generic operator who troubleshoots from a flow chart, not very helpful. But if you ask them to put you through to an experienced help person, they will.

I hope everything will be okay with the computer. This really sucks. And phew that you are still under warranty!
