The sucker FELTED. I gave the sweater one last soak to block out the collar, and then I spun it in my machine. I usually have absolutely no trouble spinning wool but this time when I pulled it out, it seemed thicker somehow. I laid it out on my blocking board and smoothed it out and it was obvious that it had felted somewhat. It didn't shrink in width, but I lost about an inch in each sleeve and the total length of the sweater. I couldn't believe it. I guess next time it needs a bath I'm going to have to squeeze it out in towels instead. While I'm disappointed I can't trust the spin cycle for this yarn, I'm happy with the result of a little bit of felting.

My only complaint is that somehow my front bands are a little too long and they flare out a bit at the bottoms. I don't know what to do about it, so I guess I'll leave it. Otherwise, I love the sweater. I just need to figure out some kind of closure.

I think it looks fabulous. I told you that last night. It looks great on you as well.

Thank you. :) The stitch definition is all there and the only real difference in the fabric is that it's obvious everything has "snugged up." It looks like all the stitches have nestled in together, and the fabric feels a bit firmer. No real harm done, and in the end I think it's a good thing because now I doubt the sweater is going to grow from its own weight.

Starsky is just gorgeous...you did a fabulous job. Almost hurled when I read "felted" too!
Sorry I didn't make it last night. You'll have to wear Starsky to the next
SNB!

Wow, Maggie! That's awesome! The detail on the back rocks - great job!
I'm glad it didn't get ruined in the machine.

Wow! Your Starsky is beautiful. I must admit that my stomach did a little drop when I read "felted" as well...
Congrats!

Lovurly! You had me at felted.
Soosan · Nov 22 · 3:38 PM
OMG your Starsky looks fabulous! I so covet that sweater (slightly felted or not, though I did nearly throw up a little when I read that).
Sorry I didn't get to see it in person last night -- I was exhausted and even the thought of caffeine wasn't enough to drag me out. So you'll just have to wear it again next time!

It's gorgeous. Add me to the list of people who almost passed out when they saw the word "felted."
I love it. I can't wait to see it in person. Can I borrow it? I promise I won't spill wine on it. ;)

Oh, it's beautiful! I love the color and the style. I gasped at "felted", too! I spin the water out of woolens in the machine ALL the time, and I never worried about felting. Now I know it's possible, I'll be careful!

i didn't gasp at "felted" cuz being a knitting ignoramus, i didn't realize that the felting of Starsky was maybe a bad thing. i thought at first you were like, it FELTED, yo! many times here you have spoken in a language i don't understand (the language of the knitty), but i try to stay cool and keep up.
whatever, felted or not, i think it looks fab. seriously, the colour is just gorgeous and i think it looks so great on you. i doubt i would have the strength or tenacity to make such a beautiful and challenging creation ... without it sucking.

It looks great! Pretty Starsky!

Thank you, everyone!
Sandra, felting is the coolest thing in the world when you do it on purpose and a knitter's biggest nightmare when it happens by accident.
Liz, I think the only reason it happened is because the sweater is so big and heavy. I spun the individual pieces in the machine when I blocked them before seaming, and nothing bad happened at all. I spun the back and fronts at the same time, and then the two sleeves. I suppose the extra weight of the whole thing being in there at once is what did it.

Awesome! It looks great. I was also a bit agape on reading felting, but I am happy to hear that it worked out well. It really looks good on you as well!
I am interested to see it in person to see what the felting did cause in the pictures it doesn't look very different from when I saw it earlier.
Friday? Let me know.

Starsky looks great! I love that "banana tree" stitch pattern and the fit looks perfect despite the felting. Great job!
