Day 12
February 13, 2007 · Daily Grind · Handspun / Handdyed · Comments (8)

A lot has happened in the past few weeks. It turned out that the first doctor (walk-in) we saw about Alex's arm was wrong and the arm was broken after all. It didn't seem to be healing, and Alex's regular doctor thought it was broken as soon as he saw it. No harm done, he's almost done healing and soon he'll do some physio to strengthen his shoulder muscle which has diminished from being in the sling. Personally, I can't wait until he gets better because I really enjoyed when he used to load and unload the dishwasher.

We spent a weekend in Ottawa to celebrate Jeremy's grandmother's birthday. It was a surprise, and the family had made her a big memory quilt. They decided to do this at Christmas time, and got it all done in three weeks. Amazing. Ottawa is freaking COLD. It made me feel like we live in a tropical haven.

I've been glued to my wheel all weekend. I got the hang of it pretty quickly, and by Friday night I'd figured out how to Navajo ply! It was really tricky since I've never actually seen it done, but I worked out a technique and rhythm and managed to make a little skein of 3 ply Polwarth. I also spun and plied some green Merino. I'd spun half the singles already on my spindle a while ago. I spun the other half on the wheel, and then plied them together. It was amazing being able to ply in about three hours what would have taken me about eight or ten hours to ply on a spindle. The yarn still needs a bath, and then I'll have pictures.

Okay, four weird things (can't think of six) for Chelle:
1. My parents say that when I was very young, I used to bite my toenails. Yes. Bite.
2. I have a mole on the palm of my right hand.
3. I can't make decent mashed potatoes no matter what I do. I consider myself to be a pretty good cook, but this complicated dish is beyond me. Ditto for coffee. You do not want me to make you a cup of coffee.
4. I pierced my own ears when I was in junior high because my dad said I couldn't get a second set of holes.

My favourite whirling dervish turned four recently, so I used it as an excuse to try my first yoke sweater in the round. I started off using this pattern, but I scrapped it early on because I thought the proportions were way too narrow. I figured it was easy enough to wing, so I looked up average 6-year-old measurements and went from there. I still used the pattern's easy yoke treatment, and for the few rows that required two colours, I held the yarn in both hands! Awkward and strange, but I did it. Also, I used Mission Falls wool, so I would have had to entirely rework the pattern anyway for the gauge difference.

What else? Oh, right. Jeremy and I quit smoking. Today is Day 12.

Previous: Can't Talk. Busy.
Next: Day 26

Glad to hear the non-smoking is going so well. Have things gotten any easier since you got the wheel?

I find it always frustrating when doctors turn out to be wrong. But glad to see he's almost healed.
And yay for the quiting.

That picture is funny. She certainly does whirl. Of course I have shown everyone the amazing sweater and feel cool, as if I had some part in making it.. hahahahah... as if I have that much patience in my pinky.

Can't wait to see the spinning wheel.. what's the plan?

Also, YEAH for still being a non-smoking household. Let that roll off of your tongue a couple of times eh, NON-SMOKER.... tastes good doesn't it!?!

Day 12? That's awesome. Congrats to both you and Jeremy. (And I'm sure the spinning wheel is helping by giving you something else to focus on!)

You know, I was so surprised when you said his arm wasn't broken after all. It sure sounded like it was broken. In any case, I'm glad he's doing better -- he needs that arm for Atari!

Yay for no smoking! Kudos to you and Jeremy.

Wow, day 12! Good for you! I'm almost at 2 years! They say after 13 days, your body is done with it, and the rest is just willpower. SO sending lots of willpower your way, and congrats to both of you. Food is gonna start tasting soooo freakin good to you soon!

gaile · Feb 13 · 9:44 PM

Everything everyone else said already! Hurrah!

sandra · Feb 14 · 3:18 PM

Poor little dude! Hope he feels better soon.

Yay for not smoking! Hang in there, and you'll really notice how much better you feel (once you're done with the withdrawal stuff). I'm so proud of you!
