I haven't posted about the cats in a while. Here's Cuba, being particularly photogenic. Unfortunately I don't have a good one of Pippa at the moment.

Jonah hasn't been feeling well. It's hard to know when Jonah's sick because it takes a whole lot to take the spring out of his step. On Monday we noticed that Jonah wasn't being his usual ass in the morning (he wakes us up by swiping our stuff off our dresser and night tables each day) and that he slept a lot more than usual. And he was drooling a lot when he slept. Jeremy took him to the vet yesterday and we got the bad news. His poor teeth are rotting and there is very little we can do about it.

We've known about his teeth for a while, and we've been giving him special food and gel to clean them and we even did a bottled water experiment, and nothing's worked. The vet said it's unfortunate since he's not even two years old, but it seems to be a genetic problem for him (our other cats are just fine).

Jonah has already lost two of his teeny front teeth. The vet gave us steroids and antibiotics for his inflammation and infection, and said he should be feeling less pain rather quickly. We put out an extra water bowl because she said the medication is going to make him thirsty, as well.

My heart hurts for him. He has such magnificent fangs and I'm just so sad that he is going to lose them. Poor Jonah. I love you.

I just want to cuddle your little cats, and I don't even like cats, so that's saying a lot.
I hope the antibiotics help Jonah feel better.

Poor Jonah. That is sad, but he will be okay. It is so good that you guys take good care of him and watch him and nothing has gone septic. That could have been icky. Give him extra hugs from me too!

I am so sorry to hear about Jonah. I hope he will feel better soon. I'll have to give him a hug on Saturday after the spinning class.

I love all of your kitties. But I want Jonah to be better, most of all. Meena sends growls and hysteria his way. And she means it in the best way possible.

Awww. poor little guy. But house cats can live happy lives without teeth, I heard. But still.
I can't wait to meet your kitties!

Poor little guy. Hope is feels better realy soon.

Carrie and Okee send you their best!

Carrie had major dentistry last October and I was such a wreck. I get over emotional when it comes to the fur friends. When they had fleas I was beside myself. I don't think I should ever have kids.

The latest is now (i think) she has a food allergy. I noticed she had all these bald areas on her belly and side, so I took her to the vet and was told she groomed those areas too hard due to either a) stress b) allergy c) something else and they'd have to do an expensive blood test to find out.

So now she's on hypoallergenic food to test out the allergy business, because I'd rather not go the expensive route unless I can rule out the simple food theory. So it's been a few weeks and I think I see more fur, so that makes me happy! I hope hope it's just a food allergy. I had changed her food after the dentistry (to oral care) so it seems to fit.

In other news.. now Okee (the other cat) has red gums and I'm worried she'll need dentistry too. I don't think my bank account can handle it!

Sorry, that was longer then I meant to comment, but when it comes to cats I could talk for ages.

Cuba is like the cutest thing EVER! Best wishes to the meowmers from me and my girls!

Sophie has an issue with an area of her lower gum where her top tooth is mashing into it and it is rubbed away a but - this is the cause of her HEINOUS breath, we were told while at the vet last month. The vet said that if it gets worse over time we will have to either remove the tooth entirely or have it filed down, both options extremely expensive, as with her heart murmur they have to do all these tests prior (so they say) which adds to the cost. We're going to see how it goes. I know Jay's sister's cat (Bea, who passed away a couple of years ago) had just awful teeth - she couldn't afford to do anything so would rub homemade poultices that were to lessen the pain but one can never know with cats how bad the pain is. Bea eventually passed but it did not have anything to do with her teeth issues.

Anyhow, I know how you must feel and I really hope Jonah feels better with the meds. Your cats are not mine but I love them all the same.

Oh my! Poor boo! I have to visit and administer smooches, stat! Poor fluffball :( Higgins would like to donate one of his fangs, seeing as he doesn't use them... but we know they come from the bowels of hell, we'll just ignore him.

Nicci · May 3 · 5:49 PM

I never thought much about cats and teeth until Jonah. Working with the vet, we always tried the easiest route first to rule it out, etc.

Thanks for sharing your cat stories! I hope Sophie's tooth just magically falls out on its own. I shudder at the thought of having the teeth removed at the vet. Poor things.

Jonah's already feeling so much better. He's sleeping a lot because of the antibiotics, but when he's awake, it's WATCH OUT! Full energy and great mood. And he's been eating a bit faster, too. So far he hasn't lost any weight from tooth pain, which is good. And his breath has really improved, too.

Marjon, I'm pretty sure Jonah will live a long happy life with no teeth and delicious soft food. No matter what he'll be okay. Right? Right.

Maggie · May 3 · 10:31 PM

Awww, poor little guy. I hope he doesn't suffer too much. And lives a long life of luxury eating only tin food instead of the crunchies.

Shannon · May 4 · 7:59 AM

AFter another day on the medication, all the inflammation and swelling is gone, his breath is great, his teeth look great and you can tell he feels great. Now I know this is temporary because it's all going to happen again, but I'm crossing my fingers he gets a few good years out of whatever teeth he manages to keep. Aw.

hi maggie,
this is so ironic. my mom adopted two cats from a rescue shelter a few years ago. one was only 6 months (belle) and the other like 3 years (jerry). so both of them had really bad gingivitis. for months my mom brushed their teeth, gave them antibitoics, etc. until one day she was referred to a special dentistry vet that takes care of the large zoo animals. he basically informed her that belle needed to have all of her teeth removed. so my mom did it. and i was really worried and stressed and wondering how belle would handle not having teeth and it felt like a very very sad thing. but after belle recovered from the surgery, she became a completely different cat. HAPPY, FRIENDLY, PLAYFUL...suddenly she didn't hide from everyone like she used to. we had originally attributed it to her experience being abandoned and at the shelter and maybe abused. now we think most of it had to do with the pain she was in from her teeth. she has no trouble eating dry food or anything and is SOOO much happier now. it's amazing.

now, poor jerry's teeth weren't ever as bad as belle's until recently. he stopped eating and became a little lethargic, though he has always been a happy go-lucky cat. my mom knew he wasn't feeling well and took him to the vet and she basically ended up at the special dentistry vet again. he JUST had all of his teeth removed last week because of the same thing with belle. beyond coincidence, eh? no kidding. the vet actually said that they are investigating and doing some research on a possible virus as the cause for this. since they two were kennel mates, they were exposed to some of the same things. so we really think it is a virus or something, because they were so young to have such bad teeth and gums and my mom took such good care of them trying to stop the problem. it's insane. anyway, jerry is still recovering, but everyday he acts more and more like his usual happy self.

i KNOW that should jonah have to have all/most/some of his teeth removed, he will be just fine, and possibly even better since he won't have so much pain. i hope jonah gets better soon. :)

river selkie · May 14 · 2:03 PM

Thanks for sharing that story, RS! Belle can still eat dry food? Amazing!

My other cats are okay, so whatever is wrong with Jonah is not wrong with them, thank goodness. Our vet suggested removing teeth when the time comes, that it will save him some pain in the long run, but for now, while he responds to the meds, let him keep them as long as he can. He is already pain-free and eating with so much more fervor! And get this, when PILL TIME comes in the evening, he meows at us for his meds. I'm pretty slick at pill administration, so maybe he likes the ritual attention.

Just pray I never have to give Pippa any pills. She crazy.

Maggie · May 14 · 4:23 PM

haha. pippa crazy. :)

i hope jonah responds to the meds and it lasts a long time.

yup, belle could eat dry food, and in fact, did it almost immediately upon returning from the vet! and it still hurts if she bites, though she doesn't really bite people, just playing around. that roof of the mouth is hard stuff!
